چکیده

In this contribution a novel method is presented, allowing the detection of resonance frequencies of an externally excited vocal tract in a fast and robust non-invasive manner. The method can be applied alternatively to linear prediction coding (LPC) analysis for patients with voice and speech disorders. Sweep signals are emitted and recorded simultaneously from the small end of a tube that is placed in front of the mouth opening. The use of two sensors, a pressure sensor and a velocity sensor provides a direct measurement of the vocal tract mouth impedance (VTMI). For selected sustained German vowels and some consonants a comparison of results from LPC analysis and VTMI measurements is given. The results indicate a good agreement in the frequency range from 500 Hz to 5000 Hz. The feasibility of the VTMI method for diagnostic and therapeutic applications is subject to current research.

Comparison of LPC analysis and impedance vocal tract measurements

The acoustic measurement of the resonances in the space between vocal folds and lips, the vocal tract, allows a non-invasive, objective analysis of the spectral energy distribution for different articulatory cases. Whereas a conventional LPC analysis is successful only when applied to more or less stationary voice signals, an external excitation with subsequent measurement of the vocal tract im...

Formant frequencies and bandwidths of the vocal tract transfer function are affected by the mechanical impedance of the vocal tract wall

The acoustical properties of the vocal tract, the air-filled cavity between the vocal folds and the mouth opening, are determined by its individual geometry, the physical properties of the air and of its boundaries. In this article, we address the necessity of complex impedance boundary conditions at the mouth opening and at the border of the acoustical domain inside the human vocal tract. Usin...

Learning to pronounce vowel sounds in a foreign language using acoustic measurements of the vocal tract as feedback in real time

An acoustic impedance spectrometer was used to measure the frequencies R1 and R2 of the first two resonances of the vocal tract. The measurement was made just outside the mouth, in parallel with the free field, using a new technique that provides precise information about the acoustic response of the vocal tract in real time. Values measured for native speakers for a particular vowel were used ...

Pitch bending and glissandi on the clarinet: roles of the vocal tract and partial tone hole closure.

Clarinettists combine non-standard fingerings with particular vocal tract configurations to achieve pitch bending, i.e., sounding pitches that can deviate substantially from those of standard fingerings. Impedance spectra were measured in the mouth of expert clarinettists while they played normally and during pitch bending, using a measurement head incorporated within a functioning clarinet mou...

Do trumpet players tune resonances of the vocal tract?

The acoustic impedance spectrum was measured in the mouths of seven trumpeters while they played normal notes and while they practiced "bending" the pitch below or above the normal value. The peaks in vocal tract impedance usually had magnitudes rather smaller than those of the bore of the trumpet. Over the range measured, none of the trumpeters showed systematic tuning of the resonances of the...
